It isn't all about getting stronger

Through 18 years of climbing and thousands of hours of coaching in the gym, Coach Alex Stiger has seen a LOT of people who are capable of climbing 5.12 and they’re just not doing it. And it's almost never a strength issue.

It’s so much more than that!

It’s often about mindset when approaching the grade, and the technique and skills required to climb that grade, such as knowing how to stay focused and use good technique when you get pumped.

In this series, Alex will tell you how to structure your climbing sessions to break into the 5.12 grade.

She’ll go into strength training a bit and give you sample workouts for finger strength, core strength, and shoulder strength to support climbing 5.12.

She'll go over how to approach endurance training so you can hold on to worse holds for longer and make clips even when you’re pumped.

She'll provide drills to help you safely practice using worse handholds and footholds, and how to make longer reaches and more technical and committing movements.

If you've been struggling to get out of a plateau in the 5.10 or 5.11 range, you will be taught by an experienced climbing coach exactly what you need to do in the gym and outdoors to up your climbing game.

Alex will help you shift your mindset so you believe that 5.12 is possible.

You'll also find out the solutions to the 6 most common mistakes 5.11 climbers are making, and she'll provide concrete tactics for projecting to make the process more efficient.

Q&A Call:

Alex answered questions about the series and anything else people wanted to talk about regarding climbing and training.

I learned a lot from Alex's 5.12 Breakthrough Series Workshop. Applying the learning, I was able to break through on my projects and even got to send hard routes outdoors. Now I can go back to training with purpose and structure thanks to Alex!

Who This is for

This 4-part presentation series is for all climbers wanting to progress to climbing 5.12s.

The material discussed will be geared towards 5.11 climbers wanting to make the breakthrough, but will still be very educational for all levels of climbers.

And even if you've climbed one or two 5.12's and you want to do more--and climb the grade more consistently--this series is still great.

This is not for you if you are consistently climbing mid 5.12s and up!

I’ve been climbing for 10 years and felt I had been in a plateau for the majority of it. Climbing has always been something I really enjoyed, but I never pushed myself the way I was taught to in this course. It completely changed my psyche and approach!

Using tactics and logic (not strength or technique), this class gave me the tools to to show up for each session with the structure I greatly needed. I was able to identify, address, and improve my two biggest fears (fear of failing and falling).

Before the class was even finished, I onsighted my first 11a and redpointed my first 11b. Since then, I’ve sent 11c and 11d! These successes were things I truly thought I’d never do. I realized strength wasn’t holding me back, it was all about adjusting my attitude and adding a bit of structure to my training. I’ve left feeling so much more confident, prepared, and excited to keep on this climbing path!

Thank you mucho!

How this Will improve your climbing

  • You will feel like you know what direction to take to help you break into climbing 5.12's so you are no longer feeling lost and waiting for something magic to happen in your climbing.

  • You will be given specific exercises and drills to complete on a regular basis that are guaranteed to help you improve in strength and skill development.

The video feedback from Alex was so worth it. I have never worked with a coach before but I can totally see myself hiring Alex in the future for video critiques and coaching direction in the future. I am going to see how much independent work and mastery progress I can integrate on my own from the class and then go from there with 1:1 coaching.

This 5.12 breakthrough series also really opened my eyes to how delightful discussing beta, technique, warm-ups, and training can really be. I have been so used to a very particular strength-based style of talking about climbing and trying hard that making progress really always seemed like a matter of strength and "just do it".

This class really helped me bring a much more open yet disciplined attitude to the process of training. Alex's anecdotes and first person stories about her own climbing experiences were really useful to hear as well.

I feel super motivated!

I took the 5.12 Breakthrough class. Alex gets it! She understands what it takes to improve and move into the 5.12 grade, but she also communicates that information so well.

The information she shared was very organized throughout the 4-week course. I had been at a loss how to move forward in my climbing and Alex provided a path forward. Her strategies made sense and have been easy to incorporate.

I completed the class feeling so encouraged and confident. I’ve already improved as I’ve implemented some organization, tactics and skills into my climbing.

Alex took questions and was able to answer them. No BS. She just knows what she is talking about and can see inside the head of a climber. Bottom line, I left with so much practical information that has really improved my climbing.

Oh and she is an awesome human being. So nice and seems to really care about us as climbers. THANK YOU, Alex!

In May I led my first ever gym 5.12. I led it clean on my second attempt and have repeated it too. With the first attempt approached with no pressure, using holds off-route for safe clips and getting lowered back down to puzzle moves and consider options.

Stuff that I thought was helpful from the class... Incorporating a non-climbing warm-up has been incredibly helpful! Also, your how to structure a climbing session was very useful.
